  • New Policy Spotlight: Use of Ambient AI in Clinical Documentation

UCR Health has introduced a new policy governing the use of ambient artificial intelligence (AI) tools in clinical documentation. These tools are designed to support providers by helping capture and organize information during patient encounters. As with any new technology, it is important that its use aligns with our organization’s standards for patient safety, privacy, and professional responsibility.

The policy sets expectations for how staff should appropriately use ambient AI tools in the clinical setting. This includes ensuring that any information captured is accurate, reviewed by the provider, and consistent with clinical documentation standards. The goal is to enhance efficiency while maintaining the same level of quality, accountability, and compliance that patients and regulators expect.

All team members who will use these tools are required to review the policy and formally acknowledge their understanding. This step ensures that everyone is aware of their responsibilities and helps promote consistent, compliant use across the organization.

As ambient AI continues to evolve, it offers exciting opportunities to improve workflows and reduce administrative burden. At the same time, thoughtful and compliant use is essential. By following the policy, staff can confidently incorporate these tools into their practice while protecting patient information and upholding our commitment to high-quality care.
